  • Supercharged Personal Branding
    by Mykl Roventine
What do you need to think about to build “Brand You?” It doesn’t matter what industry you belong or aspire to, everyone has a brand. Being able to define and convey your unique brand will become necessary skills as the explosive growth of the social web continues. The alternative is to be lost in the digital shuffle. Far from being complicated, there are simple lessons that can be applied immediately to get started. Tools, tips and common sense techniques will be explored to help harness your brand now and well into the future. To jump-start the process, a Holly Iverson, of Holly Marie Photography, will be on hand to take free avatar photos of attendees. Feel free to dress up above the waist.

Mykl Roventine is a Senior Interactive Designer at Allianz Life and self-proclaimed social media junkie. He designs things like web sites and social media strategies, drinks lots of coffee, runs the Minneapolis chapter of TechKaraoke and blogs at myklroventine.com.

Holly Iverson started Holly Marie Photography (hollymarie-photography.com) about 2 years ago after graduating with a BFA from the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul, MN. Always trying to learn more and push herself, she strives for fabulous photography.

550+ Members Strong

I’m just blown away by that number. I know there are several folks that can’t make it to every breakfast, and some that have joined and forgotten about us. However, I really have to thank all the great folks that truly make up SMB here in the Twin Cities – you’re what makes each event really worth going to.

It’s your interest, questions, ideas, and passion that drive our social media community to be one of the best in the country. There are many challenges facing each of us and our neighbors right now, but I hope this community is one that helps level the playing field and share job tips and opportunities with our members, family and friends that are looking for them.

Don’t hesitate to let us know if there is something you’re looking for, or an opportunity that someone else could benefit from. That’s one of the things that our growing community here can help do.

So thank you all for participating, I hope to continue bringing value to each SMB by highlighting folks in our community as they find innovative ways to apply social media to business, community, and government.

Social Media Job Search Presentations

Guest post for SMBMSP by Paul DeBettignies

The last three weeks I have done three different presentations and have inserted them below.

This morning I presented at the Social Media Breakfast – Twin Cities on “Using Social Media In Your Job Search.” Before going further I want to, need to say, in six or seven years of doing career related presentations I have NEVER had so much fun.

Thank you to those who attended and for participating in the conversation. Lots of really good questions were asked and this being my first time doing a presentation to this niche I learned quite a few things and will add a few slides in future similar presentations.

Announcements:

  • Please pass on to friends, family, coworkers and anyone you know who is now or may in the future be doing a job search the following web site, Be Your Own Headhunter http://www.beyourownheadhunter.com
  • As I type this (1-30-09) there is not much there but in the coming week it will be a good source of job search information. I will also be adding city pages that will have links of local information with Minneapolis and St. Paul being the first. (big shock, right?)
  • In about two weeks I will be doing free job search webinars likely on a weekly basis.
  • If you know of a group within short driving distance who would like to have a speaker on job search, networking, LinkedIn, etc please pass my name along. For local presentations I do not charge a fee.
  • If you attended today’s event (or either of the previous two) and I missed a topic you had hoped would be covered please leave a comment below so I can see if/how to work it into a presentation.

That’s it for “announcements.”

OK, I lied…

NOTE: Today’s presentation was taken in part by the two below it as well as new content specific to today. You may/will want to look at the others to get more information on doing a job search and using LinkedIn as a tool.

The following was presented at the Savage Chamber of Commerce 1-20-09:

The following was presented at the StarTribune Career Fair 1-13-09 and is my standard job search presentation:

Social Media Breakfast 2009

I wanted to share some news about SMB and hopefully gather some thoughts and ideas about 2009 from you.

I’m working with SMB founder Bryan Person in Austin on the national level for SMB. Great things are going to happen in 2009 for SMB, and I plan on bringing the best of them to everyone here in MSP. Since our event is the second oldest consecutive SMB, and also one of the largest, it’s fun to help bring your voice to the national stage to advance our ideas of what the SMB agenda should be.

In 2009, SMB on the national level will become more organized to project a consistent brand on a global/national/local level. We’ll also have access to more global/national resources (as well as become one ourselves ;) . The idea is to provide an organizational structure, but remain flexible for regional/geographical customization to adapt to changing ideas, concepts and desires of the local groups.

One thing that I hope to learn from everyone here is what you want to accomplish in the coming year. I’ve heard from a number of SMBMSPers in the last few months on ideas, but I want more. Some things your fellow SMBers have suggested is alternating from a highly planned event one month, to an open, loosely planned event the next. The idea being that we’d have a chance to hear from great speakers and then time to really network internally.

I’m really looking for great ideas or suggestions like these to make SMB more valuable to you. After all, you’re taking time out of your schedule to attend, and we want to really make sure you’re getting more of what you want from these events. Don’t hesitate to send your feedback, ideas, or speaker requests to smsmsp@gmail.com or @smbmsp on Twitter.

Additional Events

Hi All!
While I apologize for not making it to the first MPLS SMHH at the Solera, I’m really excited to see more meetups & different types of events start to take shape. We’ve a strong and talented group of social media enthusiasts here in Minnesota, and I hope that we keep growing each other’s opportunities as we move forward.

The great thing is that we all come from different backgrounds, and bring different perspectives or ideas. Likewise, some of us are early risers and some more comfortable with an evening with friends. Whatever the case may be, I hope we as a group keep finding more interesting and fun ways to get together and share our enthusiasm for social media.

Cheers!
